First of all, kudos to the lady/gent(s) who made this project happen at CountyComm.
I’m a life long chess player. Like most chess players, most of my playing happens online now - but I can’t stop collecting physical sets. I think they’re works of art.
This set is tiny. And super light.
The only improvement I can think of is to add magnets - as “travel” sets (and it turns out tiny ultralight sets) might benefit from the stability that magnets would prop use on a magnetic board.
I might figure out a way to add magnets to mine myself.
Also, I bought an extra queen of each color (‘cuz, y’know… promotion). CC should consider adding those to complete sets as it’s pretty standard when buying nice chess sets.
I made a little 6”x6” leather board out of a scrap of veg tan I had lying around.
The entire set fits perfectly in a Maratac X PAC Extreme Pen Pouch and weighs next to nothing.
Next up… titanium and ultem backgammon pieces/doubling cube/dice?? They would easily fit in the pen pouch as well, just sayin’…

This is a remarkable little set. Incredibly small/lightweight. Very well crafted.
I’ve been playing chess for 40 years now, and though I rarely play anywhere other than on my phone, I can’t stop collecting unique chess sets.
I made a little 6” x 6“ leather board for it out of some scrap veg tan. The whole set fits very easily into a Maratac XPAC pen pouch with plenty of room to spare (see pics) and is still very lightweight.
(Hey guys - if you wanna make some backgammon pieces, dice, and a doubling cube out of titanium and Ultem I could make a leather board for that and fit them in the pouch, too. hint-hint nudge-nudge).
My only tiny critiques: Any good chess set should come with an extra queen of each color. Cuz, y’know… promotion.
I’m on the fence about whether or not adding tiny little neodymium magnets in into the bottom of the pieces might increase functionality. I was thinking of the only time I ever played on a tiny chest set regularly. It’s when I was traveling abroad in my youth and my buddy/roommate who was also a chess player and I played all the time. On buses. In the hotel. At restaurants. On the bus, certainly, it helped to have a magnetic set. I supposed I could drill them out myself if I was feeling ambitious. I might.
Anyway, thanks CountyComm for another excuse to part with my hard earned cash. Next up… Backgammon?
