Remember you will always need a knife and fire to survive in the wilderness.
After numerous responses and requests with the Standard Peanut and Split Pea Lighters our staff members wondered what could be done to make it better. The answer is make it bigger and also increase the size of the spark wheel for even easier use with and without gloves. These two changes make a dramatic difference in extended run time and versatility of use in any condition. The XL Peanut Lighter is also perfect for extended trips where you will need more than a few days of firestarting.
Here's what we came up with to improve it:
I was seconds away from being the first person to rate this less than 5/5. No matter what I did I could not get this titanium split pea to catch a flame consistently. It would take 15+ flint wheel turns with what looked like a good spark and maybe I'd get lucky and it would light. I was super disappointed and thought all the raving reviews about "always lights first try" were bogus or that I had a dud. After literally hours of tinkering (trying different wicks, different brands of fuel, adding more rayon packing from other zippos), contacting countycomm customer service (who were very helpful), and searching online (which was no help) I finally got mine working beautifully.
To save you the trouble, make sure there is a flint rod inserted! I thought was a getting a great spark but it turns out I was actually just grinding the wheel on the spring. After fixing that embarrassing oversight, I've gotta say, it lives up to its reputation. Lights perfectly, consistently on 1st or 2nd wheel turn, and can get 20+ 3 second lights on a single fill which is very respectable (if not amazing) considering the size.
The thing is micro. There is no reason you cant fit this thing into your EDC key ring if you don't already carry a lighter. Personally, I carry the ti peanut (which I only got because I originally thought my split pea was a bust) and will probably continue to carry the ti peanut for the security of extra fuel. But i'd recommend either of them. I'd say the only cons are that the split pea is so absurdly/awesomely small that its difficult to use one handed. And that being titanium, they heat up quickly (but also cool quickly). So if you leave it lit for too long it might be too hot to the touch.

Lights first time every time. Even if I don't pick it up for a month or more. Awesome.
Great fit and finish, stays securely together and actually keeps fluid if left closed, more than I can say for previous versions from other brands. Overall very well made product that I'm very happy with
I've EDC'd a Zippo for the past two decades and although the flip-open convenience was nice, having to refill it every other week due to evaporation was annoying. I received the Titanium Peanut XL for Christmas in 2017, and today (01NOV2018) I refilled it for either the second – or possibly first – time since I began carrying it. The Peanut XL is cylindrical and wider than a Zippo, and I originally intended to only keep it in my get-home bag since I thought it would feel awkward in my pocket. It turns out that I don't even notice it in the cargo or cell phone pockets on my pants, and it has completely replaced my Zippo. The Peanut XL is perfect as it is. The only change I would like to see to the other Peanut lighters is to make them all with an XL-style cap instead of the tiny hole with the split-ring through it. I hope Maratac never stops making this lighter!
