This is a comfort and very sturdy knife. The D2 will help hold an edge for awhile. I like this knife enough that I am buying several for Christmas presents.
I use this both as an EDC and duty tool. The Tek-Lok attachment makes it easy to go from your off-duty wear to work clothes to any harness or web gear. I wear this on my belt in the station and pop it on my SCBA harness, then on my turnouts when no longer in air. The R4A Slim uses the larger, wider Tek-Lok, so it's a lot more stable and solid. The shorter blade makes it easier to draw and resheath, but the handle still lets you get a decent grip. They've included a lanyard to help with this, but I run my tool without it. The slim design keeps it close to your body and out of the way from harnesses, hose lines, rope, EKG cables, etc. The glow scales are awesome-- a little sunlight keeps it visible for hours, and they have decent texture for a sure grip. The D2 steel is okay-- I would have preferred 14C28N, but I also keep my tools oiled and my other D2 blades haven't rusted out on me yet. Also, the sheath is the pancake-style. A taco-style would cut down a little on the belt real estate it takes up, but at the expense of a row of mouting holes.
I usually carry folders in the 3.5"~4.0" blade length, but find shorter fixed blades easier to draw off the belt and the R4A Slim sits in that Goldilocks "just right" balance of blade & handle length.
Have 2 of these and love them. Just a great blade that is a dream for a camp knife.
When the full-size R4A knives first debuted, I purchased two. I like the design, somewhere between an Ontario Blackbird and a Kephart, and the true spear point blade really appealed to me. Once I had the knives in hand, I was very happy I had purchased two. They're super comfortable, very durable, and the full flat grind makes them nice and slicey despite the thick blade stock.
And, I have to say, I've been very happy with these smaller R4A Slim knives. I also really like the texture and feel of the UGM glow material the scales are made from; it's smooth yet also grippy. The scales, freshly charged from a quick burst of full sun, will glow so bright in a dark room that you can literally read by the light they give off.
Plain and simple, these R4A Slims are just handy, comfortable, capable, and durable tools.
The heat treat on the D2 is spot on. I've had absolutely zero concerns with corrosion, the knife holds an edge very well, and it's super easy to sharpen with a few flicks across a ceramic or honing rod. They fit my 2XL hands very comfortably in a 3-finger grip, and I can even squeeze my whole paw on there for those times when I need the leverage. I can also slip this down into a pocket and have a fixed blade at the ready whenever and wherever the need might arise.
