I use this for holding small pieces of my models when I'm building or painting. I really like how I can get any angle I need with it. Very sturdy but also quick to break down.
The only think I would change, would be to add some rubber covers to the teeth to not damage the surface. I used some off some other alligator clamps but they are too big. I will probably use some small heat shrink since I will needing to cover the teeth more than I will need them.
Nice device for holding small parts for those species with only two hands. ;)
This is a great improvement over the old alligator clip units of my youth! Had to solder some very small brass rings and with one hand holding the soldering iron and the other holding the solder, I was one hand short to hold the rings. I still have the alligator clip unit but this is far better. Well made and very stable. Why I bought a second one. Only issue I have is assembling the tiny ball ends into the flat links with my fat fingers was a bit of a challenge. But well worth it.
Among others, one of my hobbies is stained glass. When copper foiling a piece, I use this to hold/steady small pieces to keep the soldering line horizontal while I solder it. It is great. No directions come with it, but all I had to do was look at the picture and knew immediately how to assemble it. It is well made and the being able to secure it to the table is a must for me. So, I highly recommend the Hobby Hand.
I've used half a dozen various types of helping hands, from the articulating plastic arms to the clamps that look like they came off a cheap multimeter. Saying countycomm's are the best just falls short of the reality. These are the best in the way that Gretzky is the best player ever in hockey. Second place is so far behind that you question why they showed up to the match.
As for a quantitative reason:
-Stainless steel, the only part I could find that was magnetic was the spring in the clamp. While I don't know what the spring is made of, it is certainly coated in something that looks like nickel, and I doubt it will ever rust.
-Easy adjustment and locking - the wing nuts on the joints give you the torque you need with just your fingertips to lock the arms into place. Once assembled, you don't need tools for it.
-Easy to remove and add arm segments - it takes seconds to pull a segment off or add another. No tools needed, just a little bit of precision with your fingers.
-The actual clamp - the teeth are cut in a way so that the teeth are flat against the clamped surface up until about 15mm(0.60"). This means less chance of the clamped item rotating.`
-The jaws can be adjusted or replaced with something you custom make if you are working with the same item repetitively.
-The base - has enough weight to be used without being clamped down if you aren't using much length. Otherwise, it is predrilled and comes with hardware to secure it to a workbench.
All of this for $24.95?! I've got 2 already, and will probably mount a third one on my boat to help with untangling fishing line or tying on lures. I've told everyone I know who does soldering work to get these and stop being frustrated all the time.
